While California as a whole has a reputation for high temperatures, San Francisco enjoys a temperate marine climate year round –  usually hovering between 40° and 70° F. Winter months tend to be chilly, so a warm jacket is always a good idea. Pack an umbrella, as we see most of our rain in these winter months. Spring means mild temperatures, but again, bring a sweater or lightweight jacket on daytrips for fluctuations in temperature. Expect our famous fog to blanket the city in mornings and evenings, especially in the summer. It usually burns off in the course of the day, however typical summer clothes are not appropriate. The marine layer keeps temperatures well below what you may expect for June, July and August. You’ll be best prepared with long pants and a sweater or light coat. When adventuring north to Marin, Napa and Sonoma counties or south to Santa Cruz and San Jose, shorts and t-shirts are best as summer temperatures are much warmer than in the city. Autumn gives San Francisco its traditional “summer” weather and temperatures go into the high 70’s and 80’s in September and October. To be most comfortable in our city by the bay, pack a jacket whenever you plan to visit.

SFG Guide

Working your way around San Francisco will be much easier if you understand a few general rules about the city:

SFG Guide
1. When asking directions, ask for the cross streets as well. They are an integral part of any address and will make finding your destination much easier.
2. Pay particular attention to one way streets. San Francisco boasts an abundance. The parallel streets on either side of a one-way street flow in the opposite direction.
3. San Franciscans tend to refer to a street by its proper name only – that is, without necessarily specifying it as “street” or “avenue.” The exception applies to numbered rather than named streets. There are 25 numbered streets located “South of Market.”
There are also 46 parallel avenues located in the Richmond & Sunset Districts surrounding Golden Gate Park.
4. Many of San Francisco’s streets are quite long, and the city’s famous hills will often cut into the line of a street. However, it will almost invariably pick up under the same name on the other side of the hill.

Parking:
SFG Guide
Parking is at a premium in San Francisco. Parking regulations are strictly enforced in all parts of the city. Read posted signs carefully. Improperly parked car can be ticketed and may even be subject to towing (at your expense). This is costly and time consuming. Save yourself headaches by abiding by time limits in street spaces, parking in designated lots or at parking meters most of which accept quarters only.

To prevent runaway cars, the city enforces a law requiring drivers to curb their wheels. When parking UPHILL, turn wheels toward the street; DOWNHILL, turn wheels into curb.

Unless otherwise posted, speed limits are 25mph on surface streets and 65mph on freeways. California enforces seatbelt and child safety seat laws, and there are strict drunk-driving laws which carry severe consequences. Also, California law requires if windshield wipers are on, headlights must be on. San Francsico also has a "hands free" law which states you cannot drive and talk on a cell phone at the same time. You must have bluetooth or other technology to take or make phone calls while driving.
