Location:
San Francisco. Located on Bowley Street off Lincoln Boulevard in the
Presidio.
Baker Beach offers lots of grassy sand dunes on which to relax and enjoy
great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands. The beach is
dangerous for swimmers, but great for hiking and sunbathing.
Note: The northern end of the beach is a popular spot
for nude sunbathers.
Location:
San Francisco. Adjacent to the exclusive Sea Cliff District.
This popular family beach is one of San Francisco's few beaches safe for
swimming. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer and there are
changing rooms, barbeque pits and an enclosed sundeck. The beach is
accessible from Seacliff and 28th Avenue, near El Camino del Mar. Be
prepared for a rather steep hike downhill to access this beach.
Location:
San Francisco. Point Lobos Avenue and Merrie Way, west of Lincoln Park.
Land's End is rugged, scenic beach on the ocean, with narrow trails for
hiking. A mile of winding trails end above San Francisco Bay. Bring a
jacket and stay away from cliff edges.
Location:
San Francisco. Western edge of the city from approximately Sloat
Boulevard to Golden Gate Park.
This popular beach stretches four miles of sandy shoreline. The water is
cold and the undertow is very dangerous, so swimming is not allowed.
Often you can watch hardy surfers tackle the waves. At the north end of
the beach, the Cliff House is perched high above the shore and includes
a rare camera obscura, the Musee Mechanique with a collection of vintage
coin-operated devices,, and popular restaurants. A four-mile walk down
the beach or along Ocean Beach Esplanade, an adjacent paved walkway, or
a short drive along Great Highway brings you to Fort Funston, with a
wooden observation deck built into the hillside. Stop into the Beach
Chalet, on the ocean end of Golden Gate Park at 35th Avenue at Great
Highway, where the Visitors Center is stocked with informational
pamphlets and maps. The brew-pub upstairs offers food, libations and
great views.
