These two large residential neighborhoods, the Richmond,
north of Golden Gate Park, and the Sunset, south of it, are
ethnically diverse areas.
The Sunset District is home to the University of
California, San Francisco.
Ocean Beach, the stretch of coast from Lands End to Fort
Funston, has flat sandy beaches for strolling and jogging
and paved walkways for biking and skating. The water is not
suitable for swimming, but surfers take advantage of the
consistent waves. The Beach Chalet, located at 1000 Great
Highway @ Golden Gate Park, includes two restaurants and
Visitors Information Center.
The historic Cliff House, built in 1863 and now a remodeled
restaurant, located at Great Highway and Point Lobos Avenue,
overlooks the Pacific Ocean with a view of Seal Rocks,
usually inhabited by a colony of sea lions.
Just north is Sutro Bath Ruins. Once the world’s largest
public swimming establishments, they were destroyed by fire
in the 1960s, leaving behind these ruins.
From the intersection of Pt. Lobos Avenue and 48th Avenue,
the Coastal Trail leads to a 3-mile hike to Land’s End, the
steep northwest headland of San Francisco offers spectacular
views. Don’t stray off the trails and be careful of the
winds on the cliffs. The Land’s End trail ends at China
Beach, a small beach tucked in the walls of steep cliffs.
Sand and grassy areas are great for picnics, but swimming is
dangerous and the water is frigid.
San Francisco Zoo is located at 45th Avenue and Sloat at
the Pacific Ocean, and is open daily. Lake Merced is a
C-shaped lake in Harding Park (best know for its golf
course). The circuit path is popular with runners and
walkers. Lake use is 6:30am to 5pm - 8:30pm to coincide with
daylight hours depending on the month. At the main entrance
on Harding Rd. off Skyline Blvd., visitors can rent Rowboats
or canoes, and buy fishing permits. Call 415-831-2700 for
information. Harding Park (18 hole) and Fleming (9 hole)
Golf Courses are located at Skyline Blvd. and Harding Road
in San Francisco, Call 415-664-4690. The course was designed
by Willie Watson and opened in 1930. The course is bordered
on three sides by Lake Merced, offering several scenic views
of the surrounding area.
Stern Grove, 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard, offers lovely
greens to stroll and hiking through fragrant eucalyptus
trees. The main attraction is its natural amphitheatre, the
venue for a popular annual free summer concert series.
In the Richmond District, Lincoln Park at 34th Avenue &
Clement Street is home to The Legion, San Francisco’s museum
of both antique and contemporary art. A Holocaust memorial
is located a few yards from the fountain in the front
courtyard. A public 18-hole golf course is adjacent to the
museum. Tee time reservations can be obtained by calling the
golf reservation system at 415-750- Golf 415-750-4653.
