Mission Bay is a neighborhood on the roughly bounded by Townsend
Street on the north, Third Street on the east, Mariposa Street
on the south, and 7th Street and Interstate 280 on the west.
From its history as the main local rail yard for the Southern
Pacific Railroad Company, it has evolved in to an affluent area
of luxury condominiums, high-end restaurants and retail, and a
center for biotechnology research and development. Notable in
the area are a new research campus of the University of
California, San Francisco, UCSF Mission Bay, the headquarters of
the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
For public transit, Mission Bay is served by the N Judah and
the T Third Street lines of Muni Metro. The N Judah links the
neighborhood to Downtown, BART, and the City’s western Sunset
District. The T links to downtown and BART. Other bus and
trolley lines link the area to neighborhoods to the north, west
and south. Caltrain rail system connects Mission Bay with San
Jose and other points south.
Adjacent to AT&T Park and the South Beach neighborhood,
Mission Bay has been selected by UCSF as the location for new
289-bed hospital serving children, women, and cancer patients.
