Famous for the intersection of Haight & Ashbury Streets, the
“Summer of Love,” and hippies, Haight Street, between
Stanyan and Buena Vista Park, now includes vestiges of the
60s along with an interesting collection of cafes, unique
shops, vintage clothing stores, chain stores, nightclubs,
and colorful residents.
Some of the most famous landmarks in this neighborhood
include former homes of several counterculture icons
including the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson
Airplane. Northeast of the Haight, at Hayes and Steiner
Streets lies Alamo Square, across from which lies a string
of beautiful and colorful Victorian homes, “painted ladies”
that have been so often photographed that the view has
become known as “Postcard Row.’’ For tours of this historic
neighborhood, call Haight Ashbury Flower Power Walking Tour
