CITY HALL TOURS : |
|
 |
Built in 1915 in Beaux-Arts style by San Francisco
architects Arthur Brown, Jr., and John Bakewell,
Jr., and reopened in 1999 after a meticulous
four-year restoration, San Francisco City Hall
features a 307 foot high dome (taller than the US
Capital, and in fact the tallest dome in North
America) accented with 23.5 carat gold leaf;
sumptuous interior design influenced by Greek,
Roman, Italian and French decorative arts; and its
centerpiece - a harmoniously proportioned, light
filled, colonnaded rotunda atop a grand central
staircase of Tennessee pink marble. Besides being
the seat of government of the City and County of San
Francisco where the offices of the Mayor, the Board
of Supervisors (San Francisco's legislative body)
and 1,000 city employees are located, City Hall is
and has always been a place for weddings, galas and
other celebrations, large and small. Marilyn Monroe
and Joe DiMaggio, and Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo
were among the thousands of couples married there.
San Francisco City Hall Docent Tour Program offers
the following tours: Monday through Friday at 10am,
noon and 2pm. Tours run 45 minutes to an hour. For
individuals and groups of seven or fewer, no
reservations are required and the tour is free.
Reservations are required for groups of eight or
more. A fee is charged for private groups of eight
or more. There is no charge for school groups from
the elementary through high school levels. The
sign-up location for tours is the Docent Tour kiosk,
located in the Goodlett Place (Polk Street) lobby
next to the elevators. 415-554-6139 |
