ALCATRAZ |
|
|
|
Discovered in 1775, Alcatraz Island once
served as the site of the first American
lighthouse on the West Coast and then as
a harbor defense fort during the Civil
War. The Island’s isolated location in
the Bay eventually determined its
utility as a federal prison from 1934 to
1963, home to the likes of Al Capone and
the “Birdman.”Following the prison’s
closing (1963), Native Americans seized
the Island in 1969 and claimed it as
Indian land. Alcatraz, a mile and a half
off the coast of Fisherman’s Wharf, is
now maintained as part of the National
Park Service and is home to rare flowers
and plants, marine wildlife, and nesting
sea birds. Tour the Island, experience
the beauty and history, and visit the
barred cells while an award-winning
tape-recorded tour lets you hear what
life was like from its former residents,
both prisoners and correctional
officers. Wear warm clothes and
comfortable shoes. Reservations strongly
recommended. |
