The California Historical Society presents an ongoing series of panel discussions. June 4: The Role of Artists in Social Commentary & Advocacy. A panel of artists will explain their views on art as an influential medium. Whether hired by the government, or working for organizations committed to social change, artists can document contemporary struggles to visually inform the public. At this panel discussion, artists will share their current advocacy efforts and comment on the role of artists during the New Deal era, while exploring the similarities and differences between these two time periods. July 2: The History of Public Funding and the Arts - The Legacy of the New Deal. Join a panel discussion exploring the history of public funding of the arts and how the programs of the New Deal benefitted more than just the artists involved. Public art today, just as it did during the New Deal, transforms public spaces and enhances the urban landscape. The arts were greatly supported during the New Deal era and many WPA projects are located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Panelists will speak to the similarities and differences between the present day and the New Deal era as they relate to public arts and government funding.

The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco presents "Lord of the Samurai," an exhibition that explores the many sides of famed Japanese warrior elite. The samurai were a class of warriors in pre-industrial Japan who were thought of as military nobility. As professional soldiers, they were fierce fighters, but they could also be cultivated artists, writers, and philosophers. The approximately 160 works on view include suits of armor, armaments (including swords and guns), formal attire, calligraphy, paintings, teaware, lacquerware, masks, and musical instruments drawn exclusively from the collection of the Hosokawa clan, a powerful daimyo ("great name") family whose lineage dates back some 600 years.
