San Francisco
Phone: 415-379-8000
Now at the California Academy of Sciences, "From Earth to the Universe: A Visible Journey through the Wonders of the Universe." 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy, and with it comes a chance to explore the Universe and our place within it. This collection of astronomical images from NASA, the Hubble Space Telescope, and professional and amateur astronomers represents the incredible variety of astronomical objects that are known to exist – planets, comets, stars, nebulae, galaxies, and the clusters in which they congregate.
Also at the Academy:
African Hall – ongoing exhibit. Take a virtual safari through Africa by exploring the majestic dioramas of African Hall. Lions and cheetahs face off with zebras and antelope through the glass windows of their detailed displays, and a lowland gorilla invites you to ponder your ancestry. Look closely as you wander through the hall—these dioramas contain a few surprises: live tortoises, lizards, and fish have taken up residence in some of the smaller displays, and African penguins dip and dive in a 25,000-gallon tank at the end of the hall. Penguin feedings take place daily at 10:30 am and 3:30 pm.
Altered State: Climate Change in California – ongoing exhibit. Walk beneath an 80-foot-long blue whale skeleton, gaze up at a towering T. rex, come face-to-face with a live rattlesnake, and marvel at dozens of other California treasures. Then track the potential impacts of climate change in California and around the world, and learn what you can do to help . Measure the impact of your family’s every-day decisions on a carbon scale, help polar bears move from one ice floe to another in an interactive Artic Ice projection room, and share your ideas for treading more lightly on the planet at the Academy’s feedback station.
Bugs! 3D Show – shows daily. A remarkable foray into the fascinating world of insects, this 22-minute feature was filmed on location in the tropical forests of Borneo . Using immersive 3D technology, the film follows the life cycles of Hierodula, the praying mantis, and Papilio, the butterfly. Slide on your special viewing glasses and see for yourself what all the buzz is about. "Bugs!" plays hourly; show passes available on-site on a first-come-first-served basis.
Morrison Planetarium – shows daily. Leave Planet Earth behind as you fly to the farthest reaches of the Universe inside the world’s largest all-digital planetarium. Take a guided tour of the solar system and beyond, using current data from NASA to produce the most accurate and interactive digital Universe ever created. During a visit to the international space station, you’ll gain a new perspective on your home—the only planet known to support life. Upon arrival, please check the day’s show schedule; "Fragile Planet" passes available on-site on a first-come-first-served basis.
The Living Roof – ongoing exhibit. Stop and smell the wildflowers during a visit to the Academy’s living roof, a 2.5-acre expanse of native California plants. Part of the museum’s green building strategy, the roof provides superior insulation, prevents storm water runoff, reduces the urban heat island effect, and creates new habitat for native birds, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. An engineering marvel, the seven hills of the living roof roll over the Academy’s major exhibits and echo the hilly topography of San Francisco.

Smuin Ballet begins its 2009-2010 season with an exciting World Premiere by Smuin Ballet Choreographer-in-Residence, Amy Seiwert.  Seiwert’s World Premiere is accompanied by music from Grammy Award-winning group Kronos Quartet’s album Pieces of Africa, which reached number one on Billboard’s Top World Albums chart.  Recognized by the dance and entertainment worlds alike, Seiwert’s work is steadily joining the repertoires of companies across the U.S.  The program continues with Michael Smuin’s Medea, a ballet of spellbinding theatrical power, weaving a story of passion, jealousy, and bloodthirsty revenge.  Also on the program is a tribute-in-dance to the Chairman of the Board with Fly Me to the Moon, paying homage to the songs made famous by Frank Sinatra. “When Sinatra sings, you naturally want to dance,” said choreographer Michael Smuin.  Fly Me to the Moon is the embodiment of the smooth and stylish melodies that have inspired generations, including his renditions of “The Way You Look Tonight,” “That’s Life,” “The Lady is a Tramp,” and many more.  This program will be repeated at the Lesher Center for the Arts, Walnut Creek, Feb 5-6, 2010; at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, Feb 24-28, 2010; and at the Sunset Center, Carmel, March 5-6, 2010.

Carl Haber has transformed historical preservation by adapting the Lab s atom-smashing technology to update audio recordings from bygone eras into digital files.
