This exhibition will explore the use of photography in 19th-century science, considering in particular the representation of phenomena invisible to the naked eye. Over the course of the 19th century, scientists—both amateur and professional—applied the camera to the microscope and telescope, photographing worlds both infinitesimally small and unimaginably large. The exhibition not only will include examples of these groundbreaking scientific experiments, but will investigate some of photography’s pseudoscientific uses, including spirit photography, whose practitioners used the X-ray’s ability to picture invisible objects as a means of lending credence to their own claims of ghosts and other supernatural phenomena. Consisting of approximately 200 vintage photographs, many of which have never before been exhibited in the United States, the exhibition will include works made between 1839 and 1900 by both noted scientists and amateur experimenters.

sander and more zooming down Dolores Street alongside historic Mission
Dolores Park. Red Bull Soapbox Race will finally put to rest the long-standing argument about which San Francisco landmark is faster - the Transamerica Pyramid or the Golden Gate Bridge – as both take to the street as racers in a cross-town shootout. Other crafts rounding out the roster include: a hamster wheel, a pig with wheels, a giant squid, the Death Star and the Tin Man. The teams come from all over California and as far north as Bellingham, WA and as far west as Honolulu, HI.

An outstanding collection of the treasures of the State Museums of Berlin that honors the contributions of patron James Simon debuts at the Legion of Honor this October. The State Museums of Berlin and the Legacy of James Simon is a case study of the history of collecting during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and features approximately 150 works from nine separate Berlin museums. This exhibition includes Egyptian and Near Eastern antiquities, Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque sculptures, Old Master paintings, works on paper including eighteenth and nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock prints, art of the Silk Road, and European folk art donated by Simon for the State Museums of Berlin. James Simon (1851–1932), a German Jew, was a patron of the arts, connoisseur, collector and philanthropist best known for his sponsorship of excavations in Egypt, the Near East, and Central Asia that brought great riches from the ancient world to Berlin including the bust of Nefertiti and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and its Processional Way. Dedicating his life to public welfare, Simon displayed a remarkable social commitment and created an extraordinary cultural legacy. His gift of thousands of items to the State Museums of Berlin identified him as one of Berlin’s most important patrons and elevated Berlin to the ranks of museum capitals such as London, Paris, and Vienna.
